Keeping Ourselves Safe and Active
It is important to stay sociable as we age and maintain our network of friends and acquaintances.
- If married make sure you and your partner are both knowledgably about your financial affairs so that both of you are competent and able to manage alone.
- Sit down with your children and discuss end of life issues.
- Don’t rush into moving in with a relative should you husband or wife die. This is a decision to be made cautiously and carefully.
- If you do move in with a relative or move it is a good idea to keep in contact with old friends and neighbours.
- Join your local seniors centre and visit your local library.
- Consider volunteer activities in your community.
- Think about developing a “Buddy System” with a friend outside the home. Plan a weekly contact with this person and share what is going on in your lives.
- Having friends come to visit you often- even for short visits can help observations of your health and well-being.
- If you are living with family try to have your own phone and always open your own mail.
- Consider a Safety Box in your bank to store treasures and financial documents.
- Have your pension check and other income deposited directly into your bank account.
- Get legal advice about arrangements you can make now about possible future disability.
- Keep accurate records, account, lists of property/assets.
- Review your will periodically and do not make changes to it without careful consideration and/or discussion with a trusted family member or friend.
- Give up control of your property or assets only when you decide you can’t manage them.
- Ask for help when you need it.
- Discuss your plans with your lawyer, physician or trusted family member.
- Remember you are special, take time to do some of those things you have always wanted to do. It is never to late for new experiences.
